3 Pieces Of Advice for Future Exchange Students

If you are reading this paper, I assume that you might be interested in going on an exchange and are eager to explore more. As a student who recently went on exchange in Sydney, Australia, I want to share my experience and possibly, offer some advice to help you picture what an exchange abroad might be or feel like.

Before I get into that however, I want to clear up a common misconception: exchange is NOT simply a short vacation abroad. It is not just about traveling or having fun for a few weeks. Instead, it is centered around connecting with new people, learning about a different culture, and fully immersing yourself in a new school and lifestyle.

Advice #1. Be open-minded

In around late February of 2026, I traveled to Sydney for a four week exchange program, and it has been truly an unforgettable experience. Even though the weeks passed quickly, I can still remember the moment I stepped off the plane, feeling the warm and humid air. At that time, I felt both excited and nervous about what was waiting for me. However, meeting up with my exchange partner Wendy and her family immediately made me feel welcome. Therefore, my first piece of advice is to be open to meet new people and be ready to step outside your comfort zone, because future experiences of your exchange are often influenced by those first interactions.

Advice #2. Take advantage of every single opportunity

On my first day, my exchange partner Wendy and I roamed down the city centre. We searched for a famous frozen yogurt store called Yo-Chi and visited Bondi Junction, where we went shopping together. The day was packed with activities and laughter, and seeing the sights quickly helped me feel connected to the city. Thus, my second advice here is to take advantage of every opportunity to explore your host city, because these small experiences often become the most memorable moments.

Advice #3. Be flexible and embrace all challenges

Another important aspect of exchange is adapting to a new routine. For example, I had to wake up at 6:30 a.m. every day because Wendy lives far from school. As someone who is definitely not a morning person, this quickly became extremely challenging. However, I gradually began to adapt by going to bed earlier and managing my nighttime in a more effective manner. In turn, this actually helped me develop a healthier sleep schedule. From this situation, I learned that my third piece of advice: being flexible and willing to adapt to changing circumstances is essential during an exchange.

That being said, my exchange experience in Sydney showed me that exchange is so much more than just visiting a new place—it is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Ultimately, the enjoyment of any experience depends primarily on your attitude and how you choose to respond to it. However, if you are able to be open and willing to embrace it, I assure you that it will become one of the most treasurable times of your life.
